How to Make Your House Wash Experience Awesome

TL;DR

  • Clear the area — Move vehicles, outdoor furniture, potted plants, and décor 20–30' away.
  • Protect pets & people — Secure dogs/cats indoors or away from the work zone. Let family know the schedule.
  • Windows & openings — Close all windows and doors tightly. Crack exterior screens if you want.
  • Water access — Ensure an outdoor spigot with good pressure.
  • Other tips — Share special requests upfront.

A little effort upfront makes the whole experience smooth and the transformation even more impressive!

A professional house wash (also sometimes called soft wash or exterior cleaning) can transform the look of your home, removing dirt, algae, mildew, and pollen, without destroying your house. Most professionals will use gentle, effective techniques to clean siding, windows, eaves, and the outside of gutters. Depending on your service level, to get the best results and smoothest experience, a little preparation on your end goes a long way. Here’s how to prepare so your house wash is awesome.

Process Overview

Our typical house wash involves:

  • A full property protection set up including taping and covering any sensitive areas as well as a heavy pre-soak of plants.
  • Targeted cleaning of the house surfaces, including the face of gutters and difficult corners.
  • Low-pressure rinsing to remove the dead organics and loosened debris.
  • Final clean up and inspection to ensure everything looks fresh and clean.

The entire process is designed to be efficient, safe, and effective for your home’s exterior.

A typical house wash service level requires a little setup, and there are other helpful hints so you can get the most out of your wash.

Prep the Area for Best Access and Results

Move Sensitive Items

Clear the wash zone before the team arrives:

  • Move vehicles out of the driveway or away from the house.
  • Relocate outdoor items: furniture, cushions, potted plants, and décor. Bring extra sensitive items inside and move the rest a good 20-30' from the house. Overspray can carry chemical further than you think. (not required with top-tier washes)
  • Trim or tie back overhanging branches or bushes that block access to siding or gutters. If you don't want to, that's great! That area might not get totally clean and the risk of leaf burn increases.

What usually doesn’t need to be moved:

  • Built-in playsets, large fixed furniture, or heavy items that are difficult to move (we work around them carefully). Nylon is typically ok, like grill covers. If the item has wheels and is heavy, we can usually reposition as we go.

(While AI was helping me write this, it suggested that "most landscaping and garden beds stay in place". Haha! Let's hope so!)

Protect Pets and People

  • Secure dogs, cats, and other pets indoors or in a fenced area away from the cleaning zones. The equipment can be startling and solutions irritating if they get too close.
  • Let family members know the schedule so they can stay clear during the wash (I heard a great story where a lady was standing in the doorway and received some over spray, bleaching her sweater!)

Windows, Screens, and Openings

  • Close all windows and doors tightly to prevent any water from entering.
    • Inform the crew if something leaks at times or there is concerns with the seals.
  • (optional) crack/remove exterior screens. if you want bugs, dirt, and debris washed out of the tracks, crack the screens (and only the screens, assuming they are exterior). A majority of the debris will have a chance to wash out.
  • Remove any sensitive outdoor electronics or holiday decorations. The chemical is a bleach and will whiten susceptible fabrics and items.

Water Access

  • Ensure we have access to an outdoor water spigot with good pressure.
    • It's industry standard to use water from the location (water is very heavy and expensive to carry around). We'll typically use ~$10 worth. If there are water access concerns, just let us know!

Other Helpful Tips

  • Communicate special requests upfront — such as focusing on certain areas, avoiding others, or adding services like driveway or roof cleaning.
  • You are invited to a quick walkthrough before we start and after we finish so we can address any questions.
